humans are not equipped to handle social media
Themes
theme:: media, philosophy, religion, internet, culture
thought:: Things to think about from Hank Green's video essay Populism, Media Revolutions, and our Terrible Moment (these will almost certainly be split into smaller chunks):
- Sources on how written eyewitness accounts were viewed during the protestant reformation (Martyrdom class: the most reliable source at the time)
- information about the printing press
- thought:: What is considered to be the most valid/legit/trustworthy evidence for arguments (generally?) - facts that we can verify to be true in a variety of ways. Often science.
- History of mistrust in science
- Mistrust of the press / "fake news". What are the factors that lead people to distrust institutions and is it worse now that social media exists also?
- in trials, video and analytical evidence. How will AI affect human ability to determine real vs not?
- Current-day reformation: in America, is this the "culture war"?
- have other people written about this already lol / am I just living under a rock
- Are there modern-day "martyrologies" that play a similar role?
- Destruction of trust: connections to inherent need for religion/religion-like structures and rituals?
- Cancelling people seems like not that much of a thing anymore and it feels like not even that long ago it was very much a thing. Why did this change? And am I just being fake?
- Understanding of complex systems: mistrust of science again? Harvard speech on mistrust of science/research ethics course for science communication
- Ars Longa, Vita Brevis : communicating science is hard and are we at a point where communicating research is not realistic in most cases? Are there other factors?
- There are a lot of things people have written about this
